Completion of the NCCR Democracy

After 12 years of research, the NCCR Democracy came to a close in September 2017. A summary of the program's research results will be published in three languages in 2017/2018.

While democracy was the most successful political idea of the 20th century—during which time it became a universal value—it finds itself increasingly under pressure in the 21st century: globalization, mediatization, and populism all challenge democracy. Why? Which trends are emerging and what are the consequences for democracy? For over a decade the NCCR Democracy investigated how these three current developments—globalization, the rise of populism, and the growing role of the media in politics—are fundamentally transforming democracy.

The NCCR Democracy came to a close in September 2017. A summary of its research results will be published in three languages by vdf Hochschulverlag at ETH Zurich. The German version will be released end of 2017, the English and French versions beginning of 2018.

The NCCR Democracy website and its content will remain available until September 2018.
