Micheline Calmy-Rey was elected to the Swiss Federal Council in 2002 and became Switzerland’s foreign minister as head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs from 2003 until 2011. She was pursuing an active foreign policy advocating the further development of Switzerland’s relationship with the EU and the strengthening of the country’s international presence through a policy of “active neutrality.” She was President of the Swiss Confederation in 2007 and 2011. Since 2012 she has been Visiting Professor at the Global Studies Institute at the University of Geneva. In her public lecture at the University of Zurich, she will explore the challenges of Swiss foreign policy in an increasingly interdependent world.

The public lecture was part of the series "Globalization, Mediatization and Populism: Challenges to Democracy in the 21st Century" to mark the conclusion of the NCCR Democracy research program.
